When people refer to “DriveLocker,” they are usually thinking of Microsoft BitLocker (a data encryption tool built into Windows) or DriveLock (an enterprise cybersecurity endpoint protection platform). 1. Microsoft BitLocker (The Windows Tool)
If your computer is asking for a “recovery key” or you want to lock your hard drive, you are dealing with BitLocker Drive Encryption.
What it does: It is a built-in Windows security feature that encrypts your entire hard drive. It scrambles your data into unreadable gibberish so that if your computer or USB drive is lost or stolen, no one can steal your files.
How it unlocks: It uses your computer’s internal security chip (TPM) to automatically unlock the drive when you type your regular Windows password.
The Recovery Screen: If you change your computer’s hardware or update your BIOS, Windows might suspect a cyberattack and display a blue BitLocker Recovery Screen. To get back in, you must enter a 48-digit number called a recovery key, which is usually backed up to your Microsoft Account online. 2. DriveLock (The Enterprise Security Software)
If you are using a work computer or managing IT for a company, you are likely looking at DriveLock, a specialized corporate data protection platform. BitLocker overview – Microsoft Support
