Step-by-Step Guide: Downloading Website Assets Using WebSiteSniffer
WebSiteSniffer is a dedicated packet-sniffer tool created by NirSoft. It runs in the background, intercepts data while you browse, and automatically extracts specific website assets to your hard drive.
Here is how to set up and use WebSiteSniffer to download web assets seamlessly. Step 1: Download and Extract the Software
WebSiteSniffer is a portable application, meaning it requires no formal installation. Go to the official NirSoft website. Download the ZIP file for WebSiteSniffer.
Extract the contents into a dedicated folder on your computer. Step 2: Download a Network Capture Driver
WebSiteSniffer requires a capture driver to intercept network traffic. Download and install either Npcap or WinPcap.
If using Npcap, ensure you check the option to install it with “WinPcap API compatibility mode” during setup. Step 3: Configure Advanced Options
When you launch WebSiteSniffer.exe for the first time, the “Advanced Options” dialog box will appear.
Select a Capture Method: Choose the packet-sniffing driver you installed (e.g., Npcap).
Select Your Network Adapter: Click on the specific network interface card connected to your internet.
Choose Download Filter Types: Check the boxes for the file types you want to save. Options include HTML, CSS, Images, Scripts, Flash, and Video/Audio files.
Set the Base Folder: Browse and select the destination directory where WebSiteSniffer will organize and save your downloaded assets. Step 4: Start the Capture Process Once configuration is complete, click OK. The main interface will open.
Click the green Start button (play icon) on the top toolbar to begin monitoring. Step 5: Browse the Target Website
Open your preferred web browser (such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge).
Navigate to the website hosting the assets you want to download.
Scroll through the page and interact with the content to trigger asset loading.
WebSiteSniffer will automatically intercept the data and sort files into folders based on their website domain and file type. Step 6: Stop and View Your Assets
Once you have collected the necessary files, return to the application.
Click the red Stop button on the toolbar to end the packet capture.
Open your designated Base Folder to access your organized website assets.
