Star Wars is an epic, intergalactic space opera created by filmmaker George Lucas, known for its thrilling blend of science fiction and fantasy, iconic characters, and sweeping mythic storytelling. Set “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away,” the franchise primarily chronicles the generational battles between the Jedi, peacekeepers who use the “light side” of a mystical energy field called the Force, and the Sith, who exploit its dark side.

The franchise’s core is the Skywalker Saga, a collection of nine episodic films that follow three generations of the Skywalker family. The series was released out of chronological order, building a sprawling mythology. The Skywalker Saga The Original Trilogy (1977–1983):

Episodes IV–VI: Introduces a farmboy named Luke Skywalker, Han Solo (a roguish smuggler), and Princess Leia as they join the Rebel Alliance to defeat the tyrannical Galactic Empire, commanded by the fearsome Darth Vader. The Prequel Trilogy (1999–2005):

Episodes I–III: Explores the tragic backstory of Luke and Leia’s father, Anakin Skywalker, detailing his journey from a slave and gifted Jedi to his corruption by the dark side as Darth Vader. The Sequel Trilogy (2015–2019):

Episodes VII–IX: Follows a new generation of heroes—including a scavenger named Rey and former Stormtrooper Finn—as they fight a successor to the Empire called the First Order, eventually allying against the resurrected Sith Lord, Emperor Palpatine. Expanding the Galaxy

Outside the nine core films, the universe has drastically expanded through highly popular standalone films and television series.
